Art in Public Space

Krumpholz Company, Kronach, Germany, 2008
Silvia Willkens was commissioned for a large scale wall painting project for the façade of the new factory building in Unterlangenstadt/Kronach. In July 2008 two images were completed: the painting on the front wall (27 feet high, 63 feet wide) and the painting on the side wall (27 feet high, about 12 feet wide). She used Sto Acrylics for outdoor purposes.

Institute of Anthropology, 2012

Silvia Willkens entered a juried competition for a large outdoor work and received the commission, which is now installed in the forecourt of the Institute of Anthropology at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany. It is a free-standing wall about 9 feet tall and 30 feet wide, consisting of 18 printed panels. It is entiteled “RICERARE” and represents humans investigating as well as humans being investigated by themselves.

Manoir de Cleuyou, Quimper, France
In autumn 2008 the owners of the Manoir de Cleuyou in France contracted with Silvia Willkens for a new design of the walls in the central hall of the estate. The existing wood panelling (boisserie) from the 18th century was to be maintained and its empty panels were to be painted in picturesque motifs. By changing dimensions, the artist found a solution to this challenging task. The main motif was distributed over several panels: through the architecture of the boisserie an oversized female visage gazes into the room.
